After Gary serving 25 years, he stands humbly begging the Nevada Pardons Board, seeking mercy and a second chance to return home as a reformed and responsible member of society
Dear Honorable Members of the Pardons Board,
I begin with my deepest and most unconditional apology—to Robin Underwood’s family, to all who loved her, and to society itself. I took a life, shattered families, and betrayed the trust of my community. The pain I caused cannot be undone, and I carry the weight of that responsibility every single day.
Robin was not only my girlfriend but my lifelong friend. Her loss is something I grieve endlessly, knowing it was by my own actions. Ninety days before her death, I lost my wife in a fatal car accident I survived. Overwhelmed with grief and survivor’s guilt, I turned to chronic cocaine use. In the days before Robin’s death, I descended into psychosis brought on by addiction, losing all control of my judgment. This is not an excuse—there is no excuse. I alone am responsible, and I am deeply ashamed.
In the 25 years since, I have worked to become someone entirely different from the man who committed that crime. I earned my high school diploma, completed college and vocational programs, maintained sobriety, embraced my faith, and participated in programs on victim impact, violence prevention, and addiction recovery. I have also served as a facilitator in mental health programs, helping others avoid the path I took.
I know I cannot undo the harm I caused, but I strive daily to honor Robin’s memory and repay my debt to society through empathy, honesty, humility, and service. With sincere remorse and respect, I ask for your mercy in sponsoring me for consideration before the Pardons Board, so I may show that even from the darkest mistakes, redemption is possible.
Respectfully,
Gary Shepherd
